{"id":1150,"date":"2015-09-03T12:27:42","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T08:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.aas.ru\/kze\/?p=1150"},"modified":"2015-09-03T12:27:42","modified_gmt":"2015-09-03T08:27:42","slug":"sorting-shoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zimplicity.hopto.org\/emily\/2015\/09\/03\/sorting-shoes\/","title":{"rendered":"Sorting shoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tDuring math inquiry, KZE students explored ways to classify (sort) objects into different categories. \u00a0Students took off their shoes and Mrs Zurfluh sorted the shoes into various groups.\u00a0 The children identified why they thought the shoes were in the groups eg Velcro, laces and slip on shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Then students sorted their own shoes into 3 different groups of their own choice\u00a0and explained the reasons why they had put their shoes into 1 of the 3 groups.<\/p>\n<p>The first group, children reasoned that:<br \/>\nSafiya \u2013 \u201call the shoes are black.\u201d<br \/>\nAmie \u2013 \u201cthe shoes are all black and have Velcro.\u201d<br \/>\nGabriela \u2013 \u201cthe shoes all have Velcro.\u201d<br \/>\nAlexandra \u2013 \u201cthe shoes are all black and have Velcro.\u201d<br \/>\nAda \u2013 \u201cthe shoes are all black and have Velcro.\u201d<br \/>\nVeronika \u2013 \u201cthe shoes are all black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second group<br \/>\nAlex \u2013 \u201cI put my shoes in this group because they are all big shoes\u201d<br \/>\nTim \u2013 \u201cI put my shoes into this group because they have Velcro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third group contained Mrs Zurfluh\u2019s slip on shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Tomasz and Tim were unsure of why they had put their shoes into the second group.\u00a0 Tim and Gabriela felt that maybe they were all medium sized shoes but the rest of the students did not agree. We then decided to put Tomasz\u2019s crocs into the 3rd group with the slip on shoes.<br \/>\nAlex and Altai said:\u201d the first group was open shoes, the second group was closed shoes with laces and the third group were slip on shoes.<\/p>\n<p>But Tomasz definitely did not think his shoes belonged in that group although they did not have Velcro or laces!\u00a0 So Mrs. Zurfluh put Tomasz\u2019s and Tim\u2019s shoes into second group and asked: \u201cWhat about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children thought for a long time.\u00a0 Safir then suggested that it will work because the first group was girls\u2019 shoes and the second group was boys\u2019 shoes!\u00a0 Ada agreed with this.<\/p>\n<p>At the end, students noticed that we can sort things into different groups in many different ways as long as we can explain why.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During math inquiry, KZE students explored ways to classify (sort) objects into different categories. \u00a0Students took off their shoes and Mrs Zurfluh sorted the shoes into various groups.\u00a0 The children identified why they thought the shoes were in the groups eg Velcro, laces and slip on shoes.
